Are Collagen Peptides the new black? There has been so much word going around about this miracle powder and all of its benefits.
With all of the information out there, it probably has you thinking:
“Is this really worth it?”
“How do I know I am getting a good product?”
“Does it really work?”
Good news for you, I have done A LOT of research to get you some answers. I take a lot of pride in staying healthy so when it comes to taking a new vitamin or supplement I want to make sure I am putting only the best into my body.
The FDA does not regulate supplements and vitamins so it is crucial to find a manufacturer that uses a third party to test their products. You can check online to see if your manufacturer is using NSF, the Non-GMO Project, USP or Bio-Checked for their certification of safe practices and product authenticity. You can also search the FDA’s website for violations that have been issued to the manufacturer.
Collagen is a protein that binds muscles, bones, joints, skin and connective tissues. Naturally, as we age our bodies produce less every year, which is why we start losing muscle and our skin starts to lose elasticity. BOO to getting older!
I researched actual scientific lab studies and their findings and these stood out the most.
* A performed study found that women who orally took 2.5 grams of collagen daily for 8 weeks showed improvement in skin laxity compared to those who didn’t.
* A long term study that was completed on males using 15 grams of collagen peptides daily and lifting weights 3 times a week showed the subjects gained more muscle and lost more fat than those only lifting weights.
* A published study completed in 2006 was performed on 147 athletes (72 male, 75 female). The subjects used collagen for 24 weeks and reported reduced pain and inflammation.
Thus far, the research is showing positive results, although keep in mind there is very limited scientific research available. I will continue to monitor published research, positive and negative, to ensure I am not putting others and myself at risk for negative side effects. I promise you that I will only recommend products that I use or have used so I can give you a truthful review.
I use collagen peptides every morning. I mix one scoop in my coffee and go on with my day. I use a non-flavored collagen peptide that you can’t taste but feel free to experiment with flavors as you choose! Non-flavored is my preference since it can mix with anything. Collagen peptides are not caffeinated so you can enjoy them day or night.
I started supplementing with collagen peptides about a year ago for a few different reasons. Last year, I struggled with pain from an awful hip flexor strain due to over use. I read about sports injuries and how to prevent them in the future and found collagen peptides cited repeatedly for joint and muscle recovery. At that point, I was willing to try anything to heal my muscle strain and keep it healed. I also really liked the fact that it known to help with wrinkles and digestive health!
I can honestly say since I started using collagen peptides I have had more mobility throughout my lifts, my recovery has been quicker after a hard workout, my skin looks more youthful and I have stayed injury free. Of course, I would not put all of those things solely on the use of the collagen peptides but I really think using them has benefited my overall health.
In no particular order, below are my two favorite reputable companies for collagen peptides that I frequently use and trust. Check their online website for great deals!
Unflavored and odorless with no artificial flavors or sweeteners. I love the texture of this peptide, it is smooth and not gritty like some other products I have tried. An extra bonus, this peptide also includes vitamin C and dissolves easily in my coffee. You can purchase a tub for home or individual servings for on the go, which I find very appealing. I am in love with this company’s mission statement and trustworthy manufacturing practices. Click here to shop online.
