I love being able to take a weekend getaway but every time I get lucky enough to have one I leave my destination craving more. Weekends have never been long enough! I took my daughter to visit her best friend in Georgia and we had the best time. We stayed in downtown Atlanta and Wow! I was blown away with this city; it is beautiful and has so much to offer.
The weather wasn’t the best for our outdoor activities when we landed but we still had a packed schedule with the array of indoor attractions Atlanta has to offer.
First of all you have to visit the Atlanta Aquarium; we spent hours there checking out all the exhibits and sea life. We got there early enough to watch the dolphin show that was entertaining for all ages. The Aquarium had a great layout too, it was very busy when we visited but we still felt like we were able to see all the animals without being rushed or feeling overcrowded. This Aquarium is the largest in the world so by all accounts it is a must see!
Travel tip: If you are planning a longer stay in Atlanta, pick up the City Pass for you and your family for fraction of the admission price when bought separately. Not only will you get admission to the Atlanta Aquarium, you will also gain admission to The World Of Coca Cola, CNN studio, Atlanta Zoo or the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, Fernbank Museum of Natural History or College Football Hall of Fame! Saying our hotel was amazing is an understatement, The Whitely, is the epitome of Southern Charm. The moment you walk in the lobby, you are greeted with impeccable detailing in the perfectly placed décor and attentive staff ready to check you in. The rooms were inviting and luxurious. We spent time bonding playing games in our room and then relaxed and caught up on life in the indoor hot tub while the kids swam in the indoor pool.
What impresses me the most about Atlanta is the parks and expansive trail system. My family loves being outside and exploring new trails so I was amazed at all the choices we had. It was very hard to narrow done our list.
We chose the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area for our hike. The East Palisades Trail was great for all ages and was beautiful even in the middle of winter. The landscape was dormant but still had pop of red and yellow leaves hanging on the branches. The trail runs right alongside the Chattahoochee River and is heavily wooded. During the spring and summer, I bet this would be a nice place to get outside while still being able to protect yourself from the harsh sun.
Visit Krog Street for street art and murals then head to Piedmont Park for a walk around the green space to view the city’s skyline. If you have extra time to head an hour north of the city take a bike ride at the Silver Comet trail, which leads you through a dormant railroad tunnel.
We had brunch at Thumbs Up; service was great and the servings were huge! Our food was delicious but heads up they only take cash, which is a bit of a downfall for me since I don’t ever carry cash but thankfully there was an ATM inside.
Our meals at True Food Kitchen was nice surprise. The menu is innovative and consist of fresh, nutrient dense ingredients. Everything we ordered was delicious and healthy, which is a major plus when eating out.
Another great restaurant was Tepulo Honey; they serve meals that play on the classic southern meals. Their Brussel Sprouts were so good we ended up ordering an additional side of them.
I will absolutely be heading back to Georgia to see more of this beautiful state. I know I missed a lot during my visit! What is your favorite Atlanta hiking trail, restaurant or attraction?
